How to Present Your Professional Value When You Are Over 50 – Part 2
Fake it till you become it!
How well do you display confidence, credibility and charisma? How well do you project a sense of ease, poise or self assurance? How strong is your presence in front of others?
It’s your brain that determines how to send the right signals. Mind, voice and body in sync determine how to send the right body language signals. Learning how to access your own personal power, finding your authentic voice and tweaking your body language are the key steps in developing “presence.”
Presence can be hard to describe. Some call it “star power.” Others refer to it as “It.”
Some people are born with “it” as they naturally show the power to draw in an audience and command full attention. Others work hard over a period of time priming the brain with positive thoughts about credibility and confidence. One approach to increasing your presence is to practice “power posing.”
According to Harvard professor, researcher and best-selling author Amy Cuddy, “You can fake it until you make it and then fake it until you become it.” The idea is have your mind set to keep your body summoning an extra surge of power when it’s needed. Be sure you stand straight with your feet firmly planted apart, hands on hips with shoulders back and chin up and be relaxed. Breathe deeply for two minutes. An alternative to hands on the hips is raising your arms wide over your head into the victory position. Over time both these poses will increase your confidence and your presence.
