The 3C’s for A Great Leader
The mark of a great leader necessitates three critical skills. I call them the 3C’s.
The 3C’s will make a marked difference in a leader’s personal lifestyle as well as the success of their business or organization.
In so many ways the “old ways” don’t work anymore. Ever so slowly, and I do mean ever so slowly, the vast education systems in this country are beginning to realize that the “no you can’t here’s the answer” education and workplace philosophy is nonproductive and stifles the creativity that leads to innovation.
So what are the 3C’s that make a – not just good leader – but a great leader? Do you have them?
• Communicator
• Collaborator
• Creator
Communicator – one who has the face-to-face ability to effectively capture his or her audience’s full attention by making an emotional connection with excellent communication skills – storytelling skills that can be learned. However diminished one’s interpersonal skills are today, our digital world is further eroding them. Digital speed for efficiency and connectivity is creating a communication world with diminishing effectiveness. Does one really succeed by being far more efficient than effective? The answer is obvious.
Collaborator – one who understands the importance of the concept of Yes and… How many people have been shut down in meetings and work situations by a yes but, no, however, you’re wrong, it’ll never work, etc. The concept and execution of Yes and… will produce a collaborative environment where people are willing to contribute their thoughts and ideas. Even people who shut down from a prior put- down. Yes and…. means accept what you’re given – acknowledge it – make the other person look good – and do it for the greater good of the whole. That makes you a collaborator.
Creator – one who operates with the philosophy that there’s no such thing as a bad idea. A leader who’s willing to step out of their comfort zone and be open to explore. A leader who’s willing to listen to and explore ideas from every level of an organization. A leader who understands the value and importance of “right brain” thinking. A leader who builds and fosters a creative culture has mastered the key to innovation and success.
