How to Present the WHY in your Research Value?
How to successfully present your research value.
To successfully present your research value for a win/win with regulators, scientific advisory boards, investors and potential investors you need to use more of your right brain. As scientists, researchers, and medical professionals you’re geared to be logical, sequential, analytical, etc. — left brain thinkers. Thinkers who focus on logical thinking analysis and accuracy. I am confident that feature/function and facts/information will rarely get you a standing ovation in front of any group. Feature/function and facts/information are a long and often tedious route to get to the WHY?
Emotion is the superhighway to the brain.
The WHY of what you’re doing built into a metaphorical story are the tools to make an emotional connection with your audience. We learn best from stories and the ability to visualize in our “mind’s eye” what’s being presented. Your WHY? is how to get your audiences to visualize in their “mind’s eye” what you’re presenting and why it has value/benefits to others.

As esoteric as this may sound to scientists and researchers, simply put, as presenters you need to use more of your right brain. You need to look at the whole, be able to synthesize, be subjective, and be intuitive. In other words focus on aesthetics, feeling and creativity. Those are your vehicles to get on the emotional superhighway to the brains of your listeners. Once you achieve the emotional connection feature/function and facts/information can then and only then follow.
So, what is your WHY? and how do you present it? It starts with your personal reason for pursuing your research and product development. Choose a single motivating factor in your life that sets you on your current course. That’s where the story begins. In telling your story chose words that create visual images in your listeners mind. Even if there is more than one factor the best story builds on the most important one. Your story builds to present your research value to convince the listener the major importance and impact of your work to others.
