Bio/Pharma Scientists and Researchers – Presentation Tips for Success

Scientists, researchers and medical professionals in the Bio/Pharma world need more than facts and information, feature function and data-filled PowerPointless presentations to succeed with regulatory agencies, venture capitalists, and angel investors.

The only thing more powerful than a big idea is your ability to communicate/sell that idea to others — specifically, to sell the value and benefits of your idea.

Your communication skills need to be on par with your ideas. Those communication skills rely on your ability as a presenter with your mind, voice and body in sync. Unfortunately, the Bio/Pharma world — as a community — is hung up on presenting loads of data on unreadable slides that carry little or no emotional impact — hence, the term PowerPointless.

Recently, scientists and researchers at Boston University participated in a class on storytelling and improvisation. The scientists and researchers who pooh-poohed attending the class as a waste of time were far, far less successful with investors and regulatory commission presentations than the scientists and researchers who took the class to heart and developed stories to present the value-add and benefits of their research.

In storytelling, we say that emotion is the superhighway to the brain. When you get your audience to visualize in their minds the value – the benefits – of your work you’re more than halfway to closing a successful presentation. Why you do what you do is far more important and meaningful than what you do and how you do it.

In the exponentially exploding, highly competitive world of Bio/Pharma you need more than your scientific and data skills — and least of all PowerPointless — for a win-win. It’s about time you realize the old ways don’t work anymore. It’s about time you get your communication skills on par with your ideas, your research, your breakthroughs.
